What’s In A Crown?

We have a variety of dental restorations available to help repair and restore a tooth, such as veneers, dental bonding, and lifelike dental fillings. However, we also have one that can correct multiple oral health concerns and provide great stability (and a natural looking appearance). What’s in a dental crown? What should I expect when receiving one?

Try Our Quiz on Dental Crowns

  1. True or False: We custom-make each restoration.
  2. True or False: What are they made from?
  3. True or False: They can correct multiple oral health issues.
  4. True or False: We can place them in two visits.

Answer Key

  1. True. The process begins with preparation. We will need to remove a small amount of tooth structure to make room for the restoration. We will take detailed impressions, which will be used by experts at a dental lab to design and fabricate the restoration. We will then place the completed crown with a powerful bonding agent.
  2. True. That depends on where we’re placing it. For teeth near the back of the mouth, the crowns must endure greater bite forces, so we tend to recommend eMax, zirconia, or porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM). For teeth sitting at the front of the mouth, we may recommend all-ceramic, the most natural looking option available.
  3. True. We can repair damaged teeth when they become chipped or fractured. We can correct advanced decay or even address infections. We can reshape malformed teeth and even secure a dental bridge. Finally, we can restore a single tooth dental implant.
  4. True. The entire process only takes two visits, one to prepare the teeth and take impressions, and a second to place the crown. We may also suggest a patient wear a temporary in between these visits.
