What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a permanent restoration that replaces a single missing tooth or a few missing teeth in a row. A bridge consists of two parts: dental crowns and pontics, or artificial teeth. The teeth on either side of the missing tooth/teeth are called abutment teeth and are fitted with the dental crowns. The abutment teeth serve  as the anchors that hold your bridge in place. Attached to and between the crowns are the replacement teeth. The crowns and pontics are literally bridged together to fill the gap caused by your missing tooth, or teeth.

What are the benefits of a dental bridge?

Filling a gap with a dental bridge improves your smile and supports the mouth so that your lips and cheeks do not have the sunken appearance that often accompanies missing teeth. A bridge also prevents teeth from shifting, and helps distribute chewing forces evenly so that you do not develop tooth damage or bruxism. Also, unlike dentures, bridges stay permanently in place to give you extra confidence when socializing or eating in public.

How is a dental bridge placed?

Dr. Truong will first prepare your abutment teeth for crowns. After administering a local anesthetic, she will shape the teeth with a dental tool so that they are appropriately tapered for optimal crown bonding. Next, a dental impression will be obtained so that our laboratory can construct your bridge according to exact specifications. Your dentist will send you home with a temporary bridge to wear while your permanent restoration is being constructed by an expert dental ceramist. When your permanent bridge is ready, you will return to Viva Dental, at which time Dr. Truong will remove your temporary, and cement your permanent bridge to your abutment teeth.
