What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin laminates placed over the front of your teeth to correct an array of imperfections. Made of porcelain, these wafer-thin restorations require very little tooth reduction for placement, making them a minimally-invasive option for perfecting teeth that are discolored, gapped, chipped, oddly-shaped, small, or slightly crooked.
What is the procedure for placing porcelain veneers?
Our in-house prosthodontist, Dr. Ambriz, will help prepare your smile and place the new restoration. Porcelain veneer placement requires the removal of a very small amount of tooth enamel on the front of the tooth, which creates a space for the restoration without making teeth appear thick and unnatural. After gently buffing away some of the enamel, Dr. Ambriz will make an impression of your mouth to send to her dental laboratory where your custom veneers will be fabricated. She may send you home with temporary veneers to wear while you are waiting for your permanent restorations. You will return to Viva Dental when your permanent porcelain veneers are completed, at which time Dr. Ambriz will bond them to your teeth. She will make final adjustments at this time, ensuring that the shape and coloration of your veneers complement your smile and look natural.
What are the benefits of veneers over bonding or crowns?
While bonding is a less expensive option to correct the same types of tooth flaws as veneers, it is not nearly as durable or stain resistant. Veneers are constructed from hard porcelain, which is not only durable, but also has the same translucent, light-reflecting qualities of natural teeth. With proper care, your veneers can last five to ten years longer than bonding. All-ceramic crowns can also be used for cosmetic reasons, but as they require significant tooth reduction to place, veneers are always the more appropriate option when correcting flaws on front teeth.
