What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a tooth replacement option that consists of two parts: a titanium artificial tooth root, and a dental restoration that is attached to it. One or more of these biocompatible posts can be placed in the jawbone to secure a single replacement tooth, a denture, or a bridge firmly in the mouth.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer all of the same benefits as bridges and dentures, as they help restore tooth function, improve your appearance, and prevent the facial collapse commonly seen with missing teeth. However, unlike removable dentures, implants are permanently anchored in the jawbone, providing exceptional stability. Unlike a fixed bridge that requires tooth reduction on the abutment teeth for crown placement, implants do not require the removal of healthy tooth structure. An added advantage is that implants stimulate jawbone tissue just like natural tooth roots, which helps prevent jawbone shrinkage and the subsequent sunken facial appearance that results from it.

How are dental implants placed?

Once Dr. Truong has determined that you are a candidate for dental implants, which includes having healthy gum tissues and teeth that are free of decay, our own prosthodontist, Dr. Ambriz, will place the implant post into your jawbone. After the healing process, which takes around three to six months during which the bone integrates with the implant making it secure, a restoration, the tooth crown that shows above the gum line, will be attached to the implant abutment. For this part of the process, Dr. Truong will secure your crown, bridge, or denture to the implant(s), making sure that your new restorations are both esthetically pleasing and fully functional.
