injured tooth

With summer coming to a close and school around the corner, your children may soon start signing up for school-related sporting events. With any school sport, there is always the risk your child may damage, or even knock out, a tooth. When this occurs, there are immediate steps you can take to address discomfort before bringing your little one to see your Dallas dentist, Dr. Diep Truong. In today’s blog, Dr. Truong explains what to do in the event of a dental emergency. She will also be offering a back-to-school special on mouth guards.

Common Dental Emergencies

  • Cracked or Chipped Tooth: Save any pieces of the tooth you can find and bring them with you to see your Dallas TX family dentist. Have your child rinse his/her mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to control swelling. Use a small piece of gauze to control any bleeding.
  • Damaged Filling or Crown: If the crown or filling cannot be placed back onto the tooth, bring them with you to see Dr. Truong. To protect the tooth, place a piece of sugar-free gum over the tooth. Avoid any foods or drinks high in sugar, as this may cause discomfort. See Dr. Truong right away.
  • Knocked Out Tooth: First, rinse the tooth with running water to remove foreign debris. Pick the tooth up by the crown, never touch the root. Do not remove any tissue that may be adhering to the tooth. If the tooth cannot be returned to the socket, place it in a glass of milk. Bring the tooth with you to see Dr. Truong.
