Recent studies suggested anywhere between 8% and 15% of Americans are victims of dental anxiety. Fear of the dentist means avoiding necessary checkups and cleanings, which increases the risk of developing serious dental health problems. Fortunately, sedation dentistry provides a safe and comfortable way for even the most anxious patients to undergo vital dental treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry

Question: When does a patient need sedation dentistry?

Answer: The most common reason for undergoing dental sedation is to address dental anxiety. However, patients with severe gag reflexes or even developmental disorders may benefit from the use of sedation dentistry. If you have any questions about sedation dentistry, then contact Dr. Diep Truong today.

Question: What is nitrous oxide?

Answer:  Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is one of the most common forms of dental sedation. A gas is administered through a mask covering the nose. Patients feel a calming sensation but remain conscious. The affects wear off almost immediately following the procedure.

Question: Does Dr. Truong offer oral sedation?

Answer: Yes. For a deeper sedation, Dr. Truong may recommend oral sedation. A pill is taken prior to the procedure. The patient remains conscious but will remember little of the procedure. We may use a combination of oral sedation and nitrous oxide for some procedures.

Question: Will I be able to drive after receiving dental sedation?

Answer: That depends on the type of sedation you undergo. With nitrous oxide, the sedative wears off quickly. You can drive home or return to work after the procedure. Oral sedation may leave you feeling a little groggy. You will need to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home. You shouldn’t operate machinery for at least 24 hours and probably won’t be able to return to work the same day.
