vivateethwhiteningValentine’s Day is just a few days away. Have you made any plans with your significant other? If so, you want to look your best for the big event. Do you want a brighter smile? If you have teeth stained with unsightly discoloration, we can help remove or mask these stains. With cosmetic dentistry, we can help you achieve a more attractive smile.

What Causes Teeth Stains?

There are two different types of teeth stains. Extrinsic stains form on the surface of our teeth and are often caused by:

  • Drinks with dark pigments (coffee, tea, soda, red wine)
  • Plaque buildup
  • Smoking
  • Age

Intrinsic stains occurs below the surface of the teeth, often the result of:

  • Injury to the tooth
  • Tetracycline use
  • Fluorosis

Before recommending treatment we will first need to examine your smile. We will assess the cause and severity of your teeth stains.

How Will the Doctor Brighten My Smile?

The procedure we recommend will depend on the type of teeth stain you have. For extrinsic stains, teeth whitening is often enough. For intrinsic stains, we may suggest our home-based whitening or possibly the placement of porcelain veneers. Here are a few details on our discoloration solutions:

  • Teeth Whitening: We offer either at-home or in-office whitening, or a combination of the two. In-office involves placing a bleaching gel on the teeth and activating it with a light. At-home involves wearing a gel-filled set of trays daily for a set amount of time, the total treatment period lasting about a week to ten days.
  • Porcelain Veneers: For severe intrinsic stains, we may place a thin shell of porcelain over the front of the teeth. Veneers mask stains and other cosmetic concerns.
