Do you have anxiety about visiting the dentist? Do you have a procedure like tooth extraction or dental implant placement on the horizon? To ensure even patients with anxiety enjoy a relaxed visit, your Dallas, TX, family dentist provides dental sedation!
When Smiles Benefit from Dental Sedation
When do we recommend dental sedation for our patients? We could prescribe a calming agent for those undergoing more extensive treatments, such as tooth extraction or dental implant placement, ensuring they stay comfortable throughout the procedure. Our team could also recommend this for people with anxiety about the dentist, so that their fears don’t stand between them and the strong, healthy smile they deserve. This can also be helpful for people with special needs or an overactive gag reflex, which could otherwise make undergoing even minor procedures a difficult process. We want you to enjoy your time in our office and look forward to your next visit!
How We Select the Right Option for Your
We have three different options for helping our patients enter a deep state of calm and relaxation. But how do we choose which is right for you? We will look at a number of different factors, including age, weight, medical history, and any medications you are currently taking. Other factors we take into account include the severity of your dental anxiety. With this information, we can choose the best calming treatment for you.
A Look at Three Calming Options
The most common option is a mild form safe for all ages known as nitrous oxide. Administered through a mask over the nose, patients breathe in a gas and enter a deep state of relaxation, while still remaining conscious. The effects can be administered during the procedure and wear off once the treatment ends, so you can drive yourself home or even return to work or school.
If you require a deeper state of calm, we have oral conscious sedation, which is more substantial than nitrous oxide, but you stay conscious and able to respond to the dentist. However, you will have little to no memory of the procedure. You take the medication in a pill or liquid form prior to the procedure, and enter a deep state of relaxation. The effects take time to wear off, so have someone hand to bring you home.
The deepest form of calming is IV sedation, which offers a deeper, sleep-like state with no memory of the procedure. The effects will also take time to wear off completely, so you again need someone to take you home.
