Do you have an uneven smile, one with crooked, crowded, or overlapping teeth? If so, this could not only later the appearance of your smile, but also threaten your oral health too! But our team can help with orthodontics, including braces and Invisalign®. In today’s blog, your Richardson, TX, dentist talks about how we correct smiles with our orthodontic systems.
The Risks of Untreated Misalignment
We’re proud to offer orthodontic treatment for our patients. Our team members include board-certified orthodontist, Dr. Mo, and an onsite prosthodontist, Dr. Ambriz, who is Invisalign® certified. We know that poor alignment could make it difficult to brush and floss through, which in turn increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Misalignment could also upset bite balance and make the onset of TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding) more likely. Poor alignment could also be a source of embarrassment and have a negative impact in your quality of life. But our team can offer traditional braces and the Invisalign® system to correct your uneven smile!
Braces
Our team may prescribe traditional braces to handle more severe cases of misalignment. The treatment involves attaching metal brackets to the front facing side of your teeth. We then connect each bracket with a portion of a thin arch wire using a small band. In some cases, we may use additional bands to connect the upper and lower sets of teeth. During periodic visits to our office, we will adjust tension in the wire to gently shift the teeth closer and closer to their optimal position. This could take about two years on average, as the jawbone and gums need to reform around the positions of your teeth.
Invisalign® Aligners
The Invisalign® system doesn’t require metal brackets or wires at all. Instead, we will use a series of practically invisible aligners to correct your alignment, often in as little as one year. This is helpful for teens and adults alike. The aligners will be custom-made for your smile, and each set worn for about 20 to 22 hours a day on average, over the course of about two weeks. You continue this process as your smile is corrected. The aligners can also be removed before you eat or prior to brushing and flossing your teeth!
