Halloween is just around the corner, and while we love this time of year, we also know too many sweets could lead to tooth decay. But that doesn’t mean you have to skip out on your Halloween fun! In today’s blog, your team at Viva Dental Family Dentistry in Richardson, TX, talks about how to enjoy a smile-healthy Halloween, and reminds everyone about our upcoming Candy Buy-Back program!
The Link Between Sweets and Tooth Decay
How does Halloween lead to toothaches and cavities? When kids and adults alike consume too many sweets, the sugar particles can remain trapped on or between the teeth, especially if the candy is chewy. When harmful oral bacteria break down these particles, this can cause an elevation in oral acidity and coat the teeth in plaque buildup, which hardens into tartar with time. The buildup can weaken and erode outer enamel to allow harmful oral bacteria to reach the sensitive inner structure, causing a cavity. With time, the tooth begins to hurt and the risk of infection elevates. But we have a few suggestions to help ensure you and your family enjoy a smile-healthy Halloween!
Tips for Better Protecting Your Smile
First, make sure that you and your kids continue to brush and floss daily during the spooky season and throughout the year. When your kids bring home their treats, limit them to just a few pieces a day, and just after dinner. Doing so means there will be increased saliva production to help remove the sugar particles. A glass of water is even more helpful! Try to avoid chewy candies, milk chocolate options tend to be the safest. If your house is handing out candy, then consider offering your neighborhood options without sugar, such as Halloween-themed stickers, temporary tattoos, or even party favors, like plastic spider rings or little skeletons.
See Us for a Checkup and Cleaning (and Our Buy-Back Program!)
You could also take advantage of our Candy Buy-Back program, which takes place after the 31st. We’ll announce the official dates soon! With this program, you donate your child’s excess candy and we pay them a dollar per pound. We then donate the candy to Operation Gratitude, which gives the sweets to our troops overseas.
You should also consider a checkup and cleaning now, so we can help protect your smile before the year ends and your 2026 dental benefits expire! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out today.
